How long does emphysema life expectancy after diagnose emphysema?

How long does emphysema life expectancy after diagnose emphysema?

What is average life expectancy after diagnosis of emphysema.?

Life expectancy depends on the individual. They have to be willing to do the things they are told to. Otherwise they will not live long, 3 - 5 years maximum.

Although not a cure, there is a newer surgery that can increase lung capacity and help bring greater quality of life to the individual. You have to be a good candidate and that will mean not smoking, following a good diet and exercise routine, as well as following a doctor's instructions regarding medication, etc.

Does lung capacity EVER improve with emphysema?

Emphysema is an irreversible degenerative condition. The most important measure that can be taken to slow the progression of emphysema is for the patient to stop smoking and avoid all exposure to cigarette smoke and lung irritants. Pulmonary rehabilitation can be very helpful to optimize the patients quality of life and teach the patient how to actively manage his or her care. It is treated by supporting the breathing with anticholinergics, bronchodilators and (inhaled or oral) steroid medication, and supplemental oxygen as required. Treating patient's other conditions including gastric reflux and allergies may also help the patient's lung function. Supplemental oxygen used as prescribed (20+ hours/day) is the only non-surgical treatment which has been shown to prolong life in emphysema patients. Other medications are being researched. There are lightweight portable oxygen systems which allow patients increasing mobility. Patients fly, cruise, and work while using supplemental oxygen.

Lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) can improve the quality of life for carefully selected patients. It can be done by several different methods, some of which are minimally invasive. The only 'cure' for emphysema is a lung transplant, although not many patients are strong enough physically to survive the surgery. The combination of patient's age, oxygen deprivation and the side-effects of the medications used to treat emphysema cause damage to the kidneys, heart and other bodily organs. Transplants also require the patient to take an anti-rejection drug regimen which suppresses immunities and creates new medical issues.

Life Expectancy of a Person with Emphysema?

The life expectancy of emphysema is approximated to be two years. However, it depends on a person's body weight and degree of shortness of breath. Emphysema is a chronic condition that is also known as COPD.

If someone has emphysema and lung cancer what is the survival rate?

The sad reality is that the survival rate for lung cancer is about 11% That is why it is so important for people to stop smoking. People who have a small tumor near the outside edge of the lung - a tumor which can be removed with surgery - have the best chances of survival.

Because of the bad odds, a lot of patients want to skip treatment. This would be a bad decision - I have had many patients who have gone through the initial round of surgery and/or radiation and/or chemotherapy and have had many good years - sometimes even 4 or 5 years or so - before the cancer recurs. If it were me, I would go through the first round of treatment. Once it recurs, though, it can be a pretty quick downhill course. Best wishes for your friend.

There is no one answer to this. Survival depends on how advanced disease is at the time of diagnosis, what the possible treatments are that may prolong survival, and also factors such as their overall health otherwise, which may determine how well they tolerate the disease.

Even with all that information, numbers are only a guide. For example, If the 5 year survival for a certain cancer is documented to be 5%, that is a pretty poor prognosis, but that still means that 5 out of every 100 people will live beyond 5 years.

My mom has Emphysema whats the life expectancy?

This depends on alot of issues. for starters, is she still smoking? if so then maybe not long! alot of people continue to smoke after beigng diagnosed with a lung disease(emphysema, copd etc), if she quit smoking there are some steps you can take to make her live healthier.

Most doctors dont really care much about emphysema nor do they know any way to treat the condition other than standard therapy which is mainly aimed at attempting to keep the condition from getting worse. this however does nothing for the person who is struggling to breathe. in my opinion this is inadequate but its what you always here from the doctor!

here are some steps you can take to reverse some of the effects if not the disease all together. for starters, begin with a treatment of glucosamine and MSM(Methylsulfonylmethane), the MSM can and will actually help to heal the damaged tissue in her lungs allowing her to lungs to contract properly once again. this does not happen over night. MSM is a natural source of sulpher which the body integrates and uses to heal damaged tissue and support nails and hair. it allows cell membranes to become more permeable, in which they can better exchange oxygen, nutrients, etc. she will need atleast 8 months of treatment with MSM and will have to take vitamin c with it as well. if she is still smoking, she must stop or nothing will happen at all! also if she uses margine for cooking, make sure you purchase margarines that contain omega 3 fatty acids and that are non hydrogenated. dont ask a million questions just do as i say! it is possible for her to take A supplement as well. and when i say vitamin A i mean the real form(retinol type) not beta-carotine. it can be purchased over the counter at walmart in lower dosage form under the name (spring valley)

in the vitamin section. there 2 types, both come from fish liver oil. purchase the one that reads 8,000 iu's. this natural vitamin A can heal all sorts of damage tissue including DNA directly(from sundamaged skin, too precancerous tissue.) however, do not have her start taking the vitamin A without consulting a doctor first. and she should be under the observation of a licensed physician before and during the treatment with this form of vitamin A. the reason is vitamin A(the acidic forms like these) can be toxic to the liver when taken in too large of amounts and they can also cause stomach problems such as ulcers as well as dry membranes(nose bleeds, dry skin). she will also need to excercise at least twice a week, and eat a healthy diet including lots of water. fresh fruits and vegetables will only do her good.
do as i say and you can forget she ever had emphysema!!!

How dangerous is emphysema?

Unfortunately there haven't been any large studies to determine prognosis, it appears to vary widely, but:
*More than 80% of people with mild emphysema are alive after four years.
*60% to 70% of people with moderate emphysema are alive after four years.
*Among people with severe emphysema (FEV1< 35% normal), about 50% are alive after four years.
*People with the worst possible emphysema symptoms (such as inability to walk through the house and severe weight loss) have the shortest emphysema life expectancy. Even with the most severe emphysema, the odds of surviving one year are higher than 90%.

My Dad has Emphysema stage four, was diagnosed five years ago.?

Very sorry to hear about your Dad's condition.
Hopefully he will recover, at least somewhat from the collapsed lung and this will give him back some lung function.

It is difficult to estimate the life expectancy for somebody with Stage IV emphysema, because there is a lot of individual variability. In addition, the combination of a wide variety of intensive treatment regimes can keep him going for some time. Thus, it would be irresponsible for anyone estimate his life expectancy.

The bottom line is that available emphysema statistics aren't reliable for individual people seeking their emphysema life expectancy. That said, the higher a person's emphysema staging is, the lower their long-term life expectancy.

At this stage of disease, there are a variety of options available (in addition to conventional nebulised and inhaled medications that he is probably already on). Providing that he recovers some lung function after his pneumothorax (collapse), is he going to be on long-term home oxygen therapy (> 16 hours per day)? In addition, smoking cessation is crucial (if he hasn't already) and pulmonary physiotherapy is key. He should also have pneumococcal and influenza vaccines.

Again, by far, the most important determinant of emphysema prognosis and emphysema life expectancy is whether someone continues smoking. Quitting smoking is the single most important treatment to improve emphysema life expectancy.

What is the life expectancy of a male with emphysema?

It depends on a lot of factors including If, how long and how much he smoked, when or if he quit, what is overall health, what was his spriometry reading. The best thing I can recommend if he is not quit smoking, he needs to quit now. He needs to be compliant with his drug regime and if he can get involved in a pulmonary rehab program to do so. He should be tested for alpha -1 antitripsen,

It is not a death sentance.

Is it true that after being diagnosed with emphysema your life expectancy is ten years?

NOT TRUE.

There are varying degrees of emphysema. For some patients the life expectancy will be shorter, others longer. Life expectancy, even with emphysema, will be influenced by the patients compliance with treatment, available treatment and other pathologies.

Good luck. If the patient follows medical advice he/she can have a normal life expectancy.

My mom just diagnosed with emphysema?

I am very sorry to say that your mom will never have a normal life. Emphysema is a disease of the lung in which the airsacs break open and when that happens they also destroy the cappillaries that run along side them and between the two provide for gas exchange (oxygen and CO2). The Larger spaces are called blebs. It makes for oxygenation with out ventilation or tranference of the gas across the blood barrier that was destroyed. The only way to correct this is to either use supplimental oxygen which ties you to the house or to have 'lung reduction' surgery. Not everyone is a candidate. Only your mom's lung doctor and the extent of the damage already done can help to make that determination. And don't forget that your mom has a say in this matter.

But remember that Emphysema is a mean vicious killer that slowly suffucates its vicitims to death. It's not pretty. In fact it's just plain ugly. As the person struggles for each and every breath, their lungs filling up with fluid, the bronchial tubes spasming and not responding to treatments. Your mom might require a ventilator to help her breath (you can only be orally intubated for about a week and then we usually perform a tracheotomy). Can you bear the thought of your mom lying in bed attached to a machine, dependant on a liquid for food, unable to speak or truly communicate. Now is the time to discuss the wants and wishes of your mother while she can make them known. I strongly recommend that she make out a power of attorney of healthcare and designate one of you to make sure that her wishes are not only known to all but that they will be followed to the letter. I am sorry to blast you with it like this but I think that being honest is best. If you have any questions please feel free to e-mail me. I do wish your mom to have as much time on earth as she wants with you and her grandchildren. I just wish that she had a different diagnosis. I'm sorry.
